History and Significance
The first Erbil Marathon was organized in 2011 with the vision of using sports to foster peace and coexistence among different ethnic and religious groups in Iraq. Over the years, it has grown into an internationally recognized event, attracting professional athletes, amateurs, and running enthusiasts from different countries.
The marathon is an opportunity for athletes, families, and youth to celebrate diversity and perseverance, reinforcing Erbil’s reputation as a city that embraces sports, culture, and international cooperation.

The Race Route
The Erbil Marathon route takes runners through some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including:
- Erbil Citadel – A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements.
- Sami Abdulrahman Park – One of the largest parks in the Middle East, providing scenic views and green landscapes.
- Modern City Streets – Showcasing Erbil’s vibrant urban development and historical sites.
The route is well-marked, with hydration stations, medical teams, and enthusiastic spectators cheering along the way.
